First Trimester Pregnancy: From Week 1 to 12

In this article, we are going to walk you through your First Trimester Pregnancy a week at a time. The first trimester of your pregnancy is when all the excitement begins. There are a lot of activities that you can do now. Let’s talk more about it.

Weeks 1, 2 & 3 of First Trimester Pregnancy

You are not pregnant yet. This is because the due to date for your pregnancy is calculated from the first day of your last period. If you have started trying to get pregnant at this point, it is advisable for you to take prenatal vitamins with around 300-400 mcg of folic acid.

This should help prevent any neural tube defects in your baby.  In week 2 ovulation occurs, and it is best for you to try for pregnancy two to three days before and on the ovulation date. This should help you. 

Week 3 is where your pregnancy begins. Here is what you need to keep in mind

You may be pregnant, but you might not have any symptoms. You must also choose your gynaecologist during this period. Don’t take any medications that are not prescribed to you, and if you are on long-term medication, e.g. for diabetes and hypothyroidism, visit your doctor right away.

Get a flu shot if you haven’t got one already! This is also the time you should quit habits like drinking and smoking and start exercising. Most doctors recommend at least 30 minutes of exercise per day during pregnancy. You could also do yoga when pregnant. 

Week 4 

You may start to experience symptoms like bloating, cramping, feeling tired and moody. Your breasts are sore, you are nauseated, and now urinating frequently. But even if you don’t experience any of these, it is quite normal. At this stage, your breasts begin to grow and you may need to switch bra sizes. Besides this, keep away from chemicals and cigarette smoke; if you have pets, let your partner care for them. 

Week 5 

The baby is now developing organs and pumping blood. This is the time when you experience ‘pregnancy brain.’ It is when you forget what all you must do during the day and are slightly confused. It helps during this phase to have a to-do list and set reminders on your phone for various activities. 

First Trimester Pregnancy

Week 6 

This is around the time that most mothers-to-be are most worried and cautious about miscarriage. You only need to be worried if you have habits like taking drugs; otherwise, your pregnancy is usually safe. You might consider cutting down on caffeine. This is also the time when you should consider telling the rest of your family and your boss about your pregnancy. Most women, however, tend to wait until the end of the first trimester, when the risk for miscarriage is lesser. 

Week 7 

This is the time when your baby grows to about half an inch in size. Your morning sickness may either worsen, or you are ravenously hungry all the time. It is time to start having smaller, more frequent meals. Keep away from strong odours and reign in those food cravings. Remember that weight gain in the first trimester should be minimal, but don’t worry if you give in to an occasional craving! 

Week 8 

Your first pregnancy scan is performed; you get to hear your baby’s heartbeat. This is also when the doctor will determine the due date. Start reading up on baby care, from this stage. 

Week 9 

This week, you will begin to experience minor incontinence. This is when you should start exercising those pelvic floor muscles. Learn to do Kegel exercises, and do them thrice a day for the rest of your pregnancy—to prepare for a more comfortable birthing experience. 

Weeks 10 and 11 

These two weeks mark the beginning of food cravings! You will crave everything from loads of ice cream to celery sticks. This is because, in these weeks, the baby’s organs begin to function; therefore, your one-inch baby is now referred to as the fetus. This is also the time to be making appointments for your next pregnancy scan to detect anomalies. 

Week 12 

Marking the very end of your first trimester, this is when your baby bump starts to show. From here on, avoid activities that can cause abdominal trauma or a fall. Also avoid doing exercises on your back, as this can compress a major vein, reducing blood supply to your fetus.

Activities during First Trimester Pregnancy

  • You need to now learn what to eat and what not to eat.
  • Eating healthy during pregnancy is of utmost importance.
  • Make sure to get relief from pregnancy sickness; and learn to look out for danger signs, such as cramping.
  • Get as much rest as you can.
